Animated in ballpoint pen on A5 sheets, scanned on a school photocopier

Frosted acetate to draw on, acetate to paint on, butter paper for the backgrounds, everything A5, everything physically stacked and run through the copier.

Bunnyhood premiered at Cannes in La Cinef in 2024. Mansi Maheshwari made it at the NFTS with a process that sounds like a constraint exercise and produces a very specific texture:

I like drawing with simple ballpoint pens and I wanted to do cel animation as I wanted a vintage flyer look for the film. Like old rock band posters. I chose a frosted cel to draw, acetate to paint, the butter paper that divides each acetate, to draw the background layer, and finally paint on white copy paper.

Every layer is A5, physically stacked, and scanned on the school's copier. Produced by Ashionye Ogene, with Nina Wadia among the voices.

The reason to care is not nostalgia for analogue. It is that the material decisions are the art direction, all the way down, and there is no step where someone picks a preset.
